Hugh Devlin

Hugh Devlin, lawyer and adviser to creative talent in need.

Over the course of nearly 30 years, Hugh Devlin (1962–2023) nurtured the creative-industries practice of the law firm Withers, complemented by his work through his consultancy, Delightful.

Hugh’s brilliant business and negotiating skills were matched by his ability to bridge the gap between creativity and commerciality, and his capacity to communicate complicated legal points and concepts to his clients. He met all his clients with respect and a remarkable knowledge and appreciation of their creative fields.

Hugh worked with the largest companies but gave his time freely, and for free, to small businesses and those just embarking on their careers. A much-used phrase of his was “Don’t sign it”, not just because he had seen unacceptable terms in a contract but to give people an understanding and appreciation of their own worth, at that time and into the future. More than this, Hugh’s dedication to problem solving and fairness saw him look to the future for both his clients and “the other side”, to give the best prospect of a positive business relationship.

Hugh also excelled at introducing clients to other professionals who had just the skills and experience needed to tackle and resolve particular challenges.

The Hugh Devlin Foundation continues Hugh’s vital work through the generosity of like-minded pro bono advisers.
